Frequently Asked Questions
Is the course useful for an experienced veterinarian?
Yes very useful if you wish to expand your practice to treat fish. Many experienced veterinarians receive very little formal training in fish medicine during their veterinary degree. The course draws on more than 25 years of real clinical practice, diagnostic pathology, laboratory investigations and specialist teaching. Even experienced veterinarians consistently discover new diagnostic techniques, treatment strategies and practical tips they can immediately apply in practice.Â
Can non-veterinarians enrol?
Yes. Fish Vet Masterclass is suitable for veterinarians, veterinary students, aquaculture professionals, public aquarium staff, ornamental fish professionals, aquatic animal technicians and experienced fish keepers who wish to understand fish health at a much deeper level.
The course teaches the principles of fish health, disease investigation, diagnosis, treatment planning and prevention. However, it does not grant a veterinary qualification, professional registration or legal authority to diagnose disease, prescribe restricted medicines or practise veterinary medicine where this is regulated by law. Participants must always work within the legislation and professional requirements of their own country or jurisdiction.
I have no veterinary training, is Fish Vet Masterclass too advanced for me?
Not at all. Fish Vet Masterclass is designed to take you through a logical, step-by-step approach to fish medicine, starting with the fundamentals and progressing to advanced diagnosis and treatment. Whether you're new to fish medicine or looking to refine your existing skills, the course builds your confidence one lesson at a time.
Should I do the FMVc before or after I get my veterinary degree?
It depends on your workload. If you have the capacity, working through FVMc alongside your studies will build your diagnostic and clinical skills earlier, giving you a valuable head start in your veterinary career.
Uni can feel quite theoretical (especially in the early years), and it’s not always clear how everything fits together. FVMc helps connect the dots by showing you, how concepts like biosecurity, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology are actually applied in real cases, so your learning tends to “stick” much better.
Doing FishVetMasterclass during uni also builds early confidence. You’ll begin recognising signs of disease, and apply diagnostic and treatment approaches before graduating, which can give you an edge in placements and early jobs especially in zoo, aquarium, and aquaculture settings. Most graduates have little aquatic experience, so it’s a nice way to stand out.
Inside FVMc, there are short quizzes throughout the modules, and the main exam (MCQs) becomes available after one month. Once you pass the main exam, you’ll receive a certificate.Â
What makes Fish Vet Masterclass different to other courses?
Most veterinarians receive little or no practical training in fish medicine. Fish Vet Masterclass brings together more than 25 years of firsthand clinical practice, diagnostic pathology, laboratory investigations, teaching and mentoring into one practical online program. Rather than simply teaching diseases, you'll learn how a fish specialist thinks, giving you a systematic approach you can apply to virtually every fish health case you encounter.
Is the course freshwater only?
The course focuses primarily on freshwater fish because they represent the majority of clinical cases encountered by veterinarians and fish-health professionals. However, many diagnostic principles, disease processes, anaesthesia techniques, surgery, pathology, biosecurity and treatment concepts are equally applicable to marine fish.
Will the course apply to the species I work with?
Yes. The principles taught apply across a wide range of freshwater species encountered in companion animal practice, aquaculture, public aquaria and ornamental fish medicine. Once you understand the investigative process and disease mechanisms, you'll be able to apply them across most fish species rather than memorising individual diseases.
How much time will it take?
The course contains more than 120 lessons that you can complete entirely at your own pace. On average, each lesson can be completed in around 20 minutes to 1 hour. Some students have completed the course within 2 or 3 weeks, others pace themselves slowly over the 12 months. Because you retain access throughout your subscription, you can revisit lessons whenever you need them in practice.
Is the course self-paced?
Yes. You have 12 months to complete the course and there are no scheduled class times. You can study whenever it suits you, pause your progress and return whenever you're ready.
Do I need access to a laboratory or microscope?
No. The course is designed to be valuable whether or not you have access to laboratory facilities. Where a microscope or laboratory testing is beneficial, you'll learn when to use it, how to collect samples correctly and how to interpret the results. If you do have access to a microscope, dedicated microscopy lessons will help you gain much more from it.
Is the course accredited for Continuing Professional Development (CPD)?
Fish Vet Masterclass has been recognised by the World Aquatic Veterinary Medical Association (WAVMA) as a Continuing Education Professional Development (CEPD) resource. Following review by Dr Chris Walster, the course was listed on the WAVMA WebCEPD resource site and is recognised as 50 hours of Knowledge, Skills and Experience (KSE) credits upon successful completion.
Upon successfully passing the final assessment (75% or higher), you will be awarded a Certificate. The certificate may be submitted as evidence of professional development where recognised by your licensing or professional organisation.
Will I receive a certificate?
Participants who successfully achieve a passing score of 75% or higher in the final assessment receive a Fish Vet Masterclass Certificate of Completion.
Can I ask questions about my own cases?
Yes. Every lesson allows you to submit questions directly to Dr Richmond Loh. Members also receive access to the VIP Fish Vet Masterclass Facebook group, where additional mentoring and discussion of educational case material takes place throughout the year.Â
What happens after 12 months?
